One of my grandfathers was deathly afraid of snakes. I discovered this as an 8 year old when I thought it would be funny to throw a rubber snake on the counter during breakfast. It was probably the only time in my life his anger actually scared me.
After he calmed down, he told me about being a soldier on patrol in Korea. They were moving through a swamp when he tried to step over a floating log. Only it wasn’t a log. It was a mess of snakes all piled together like that photo. He was medevaced out after being bitten multiple times. He was fortunate to live through the experience.
It’s no wonder he was scared of snakes.
